Paths to Teaching

You already work in a school, so you shouldn’t have to stop working to earn your teaching license. There is a path to licensure that works with your job and lifestyle. Consider some of these strategies to keep working (and earning) while you get your teaching license.

  • If you need to earn an undergraduate degree, some degree programs offer part-time options that allow you to keep your job. You may choose to earn your degree first, then enroll in an educator preparation program for school employees or one with a paid internship.
  • If you already have a degree, consider an alternate route to certification or graduate program. You can find an alternative program by browsing the program explorer.

  • Your school may participate in the TAs to Teachers program. Teaching Assistants may qualify for financial assistance when enrolling in a teacher licensure program.
  • Alternative programs are a great way to fulfill licensure requirements with your on-the-job experience. If you already have your bachelor's degree, these programs may be perfect for you. Another great alternative licensure initiative is SC-CREATE. A program committed to helping full-time SC education employees pursue degrees in Special Education by providing tuition assistance and textbook reimbursement.
  • The Program for Recruitment and Retention of Minority Teachers recognizes the need to greatly expand the pool of minority teacher candidates. Housed at South Carolina State University, it recruits and supports non-traditional students (primarily teacher aides and technical college transfers) by offering scholarships and academic assistance.

Professional development may be baked right into your current job benefits!

  • Ask your supervisor about available professional development time. If you’re a paraprofessional or you’re getting certified for a critical needs subject area your school may invest in part of your education.
  • Your undergraduate or postgraduate educator preparation program may count for loan forgiveness or professional development. Check your employment contract, speak to an HR representative or ask your supervisor!
