Why talk to a career coach?

An aspiring South Carolina teacher talks with a career coach over Zoom

Get advice and info, based on where you’re starting and where you want to be. Talk to a coach 1-on-1 or join a group advising session, so you can take the next step in your journey with confidence.

TeachSC coaches are certified teachers. If you’re new to teaching, they can help you with questions like:

  • How do I know if teaching is right for me?
  • How do I get certified to teach?
  • How do I choose a teaching program?
  • Anything else you want to know!

Plus, when you sign up with a coach, you’ll get access to every TeachSC product and service — all completely free.

Group Advising

A group of future SC teachers listen in on a career advising session

Not sure if a 1-on-1 call is right for you? Group advising sessions are also a great way to learn about becoming a teacher.

Group sessions are held monthly and cover topics like:

  • Steps to a teaching certificate and how to choose your subject area
  • How to choose a teaching pathway and program
  • How to get career and financial support from TeachSC

Every group call includes a Q&A session! Bring any questions that are top-of-mind for you. You can always schedule a 1-on-1 call if you think of more questions later.

To join a group session: Click the “Sign Up” button to open the group advising Eventbrite page. There, you can click “Select a date” and choose the session that works best with your schedule.

1-on-1 Coaching

Our coaches get to know *you.* With a 1-on-1 call, you’ll get custom advice for your situation.

How will I talk to my coach?

You have the option of talking to your coach via:

  • Phone
  • Video call
  • Email

Choose whichever option makes you feel most comfortable.

Don’t have time for a call or email conversation? Just open LiveChat on any of our webpages to get real-time answers.

How long will my advising session be?

Phone or video

If you choose a phone or video call, the maximum call length is 30 minutes. Average calls last between 20 and 30 minutes.

If you have any follow-up questions, TeachSC can schedule another call for you or get you in contact with the teacher you spoke with the first time.

Email

If you choose an email session, your coach will send you an initial email with advice and recommendations based on the information you share in your sign-up survey.

You can reply once or twice with questions, and your coach will respond once or twice.

If you still have questions, you should sign up for another coaching session and consider a phone or video conversation.

How do I schedule an appointment?

All you need to do is select a teacher you want to meet with and a convenient time for them to connect with you.

See TeachSC coaches and their schedules.

Phone or video

If you select a phone session, your coach will call you at the appointment time you select.

For video, your coach will email you a Zoom link ahead of time. You'll join the Zoom call at your scheduled appointment time.

Email

If you select an email session, your “appointment time” is the time by which your coach will email you with advice, recommendations and links.

So, you’ll receive an initial email no later than your scheduled appointment time, but you may get an email even sooner.

How should I prepare?

When you sign up, you’ll complete a short survey to help prepare your advisor for your conversation. If you sign up for email coaching, it’s especially important to answer the survey questions with as much detail as possible, to help your coach gather the information that will be most helpful to you.

For a phone or video session, choose a call location with low background noise or that’s very quiet. If it’s a video call, try to take your call in a location with good lighting and without background distractions.

It's also a good idea to think through a list of your questions beforehand.

Check out our suggestions for questions:

  • What’s one thing you didn't expect before teaching?
  • What’s the most rewarding part of teaching?
  • How do I choose a grade level and subject to teach?
  • What should I look for in a program?
  • Which tests do I need to take to get certified, and when should I take them?
  • Do you have advice for funding my program?

Influenced by my sense of purpose and inspired by generations of educators, I teach my community’s fifth graders at Rosewood Elementary School in the same classroom where I was educated as a fifth grader. My deep pride and love is the sharing of my family’s four generations in this neighborhood school. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Education and a Master of Education in Divergent Learning from Columbia College located in Columbia, South Carolina. I am a National Board Certified Teacher in the area of Early/Adolescent Mathematics, with certificate endorsements in Middle Level Mathematics, Gifted and Talented, and Read to Succeed. While educating and nurturing students is my love and passion, I believe mentoring future and current educators has been my greatest contribution and accomplishment in the field of education. As a former Teacher Cadet and trained South Carolina new teacher mentor, I share my knowledge and passion for teaching with Teacher Cadets, teacher candidates, and induction level and current classroom teachers. I am the district’s facilitator for National Board Certification and lead awareness sessions for National Board Certification and Maintenance of Certification candidates. My service provides opportunity at the national level to develop assessments for the National Board certification process. My mentorship opportunities are showcased among my work throughout the school district. Driving her passion for educating others, I am a true example of a strong educational community ambassador.

I believe that we all have a purpose; I believe that we should be an advocate for students, for teachers, and for education. I teach kindergarten; I am certified to teach early-childhood to high school students in social studies and English; I have experience teaching K-4 and 6-8 for at-risk students, during summer school. I am the local president of our education association, which is an affiliate of The SCEA and NEA; for the 2022-2023 school year, I have been selected as the Teacher of the Year for my school.

I earned my associate’s degrees in both Mechanical Engineering Technologies and Engineering Graphics Technologies from York Technical College. Currently, I am pursuing a bachelor’s degree at Arkansas State University in Engineering Management Technologies and will then pursue a master’s in Educational Learning. I spent twenty years as a manufacturing and design engineer at various companies in North and South Carolina. I also spent many years as a Youth Director at church and coaching youth sports. There, I realized my passion for teaching, coaching, and mentoring young people to be their best in all aspects of life. During this time, I began searching for something more rewarding, so I began pursuing education and received an opportunity in 2013 to become a teacher at Clover High School. Now, I teach Engineering for grades 9-12 at Clover High School’s Applied Technology Center in York School District 2 and coach football. Some of my major accomplishments in education is when I was awarded Clover School Districts 2022-2023 Teacher of the Year and was named a finalist for the South Carolina State Teacher of the Year in 2024.
