• at least one course in a natural science discipline (BIO, CHM, EES, PHY, or SCI) with a laboratory experience.

Except for the semester when they are teaching interns, music education majors must enroll in performance study courses every semester.

Each music education major will also present a thirty-minute recital in the designated performance studies area during their junior or senior year.

Students who successfully complete course requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Music with a major in Music Education and receive passing scores in Praxis Subject Assessments and Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) tests, will be recommended for a South Carolina teacher certificate in PK-12.

You are required to take EDU-221: Students with Exceptionalities.

This course includes:

• Instruction in the characteristics of persons with exceptionalities
• Implications for teaching and learning
• Applications of special education procedures and services
• Extensive field experiences

You will also participate in a wide range of K-12 school settings, with multiple opportunities to interact with different student populations. You will reflect on your interactions to identify professional and personal growth and connect theory with practice.

Mentors and coaches offer skilled and experienced guidance. They work closely with you to ensure your development as a future teacher.  

Cooperating teachers are highly knowledgeable about state and local learning standards and policies. Furman selects them for their mentoring abilities and instructional skills.

The University regularly assesses mentors and coaches, including evaluations from students whom they have supervised.
