The Education Department offers elementary teacher certification in grades 2-6 (through a major in education) and music teacher certification in grades PK-12 (choral and instrumental for music content majors).
Furman University has earned the following distinctions:
- 91 percent overall retention rate for the last seven years
- 100 percent of the class of 2023 and 2024 hired for teaching positions
- 71 alumni named Teacher of the Year over the last five years
- Received The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation’s Frank Murray Leadership Recognition for Continuous Improvement Award in 2022

The Childers Foundation Teaching Excellence Award is awarded annually to an outstanding elementary teacher during the teaching internship in fall of the fifth year. The award amount is $1,500.
