Program Hallmarks
The PC Education department strives to place students in the classroom immediately. You will begin 20 clinical hours when you take the Introduction to Education class. You will also complete classes that are taught partially on campus, and partially in classrooms. For example, the Read2Succeed classes are taught on campus, and in classrooms with students. The PC teacher candidates take the pedagogical lessons taught on campus and implement them in classrooms with students.
PC has a strong commitment to training their teacher candidates to work with families and students in poverty. Ruby Payne's work is intertwined with much of the coursework, and students complete a Family and Community study before graduation. They also value inclusion and diversity and place teacher candidates in diverse placements (rural/urban) before they graduate.
As a student at PC, you will get to enjoy a small class-to-faculty ratio. Most classes have a faculty-to-student ratio of 10:1. PC also cohorts students so you can prepare and take your Praxis Core and Praxis II licensure exams with assistance from faculty. The faculty enjoys mentoring and coaching future teachers, and over half of the faculty have worked as school administrators.
