Miguel Caldwell

I was drawn to Winthrop because I felt a level of comfort, but a challenge to grow at the same time. I grew up in a family-oriented home in a very small town, where I learned the value of relationships. Winthrop reminded me of my upbringing with the small class sizes and the ease of getting to know people. However, Winthrop also had the big school feel because of the diversity that I get to see here.

Program Info

Winthrop has a rich heritage of preparing educators. Winthrop graduates are consistently recognized with awards and recognitions, and school leaders seek to recruit and retain graduates from the teacher education programs.

The Winthrop model is recognized regionally and nationally for its partnership with PreK-12 school districts, its focus on preparing teachers for the diversity within South Carolina schools, and its use of field experiences as an integral part of the preparation of new teachers.

The teacher education core was established around the themes of differentiation, assessment, cultural competence, and professionalism and perseverance. These four themes serve as guiding principles along with attention to the Unit Standards, dispositions, and resiliency to anchor teacher preparation in the needs of schools today and in the future.
