In South Carolina, you’ll need a minimum of a master’s degree to start your journey to becoming a principal. To become a school principal, you’ll need credentials. In South Carolina, these credentials are called a principal certificate. You can earn different certifications, including Elementary Principal (Tier 1 and 2) or Secondary Principal (Tier 1 and 2). Similar to teaching certificates, each state has different requirements you must meet to earn your certificate. You’ll apply for your principal certificate from the state of South Carolina.

To earn your principal certificate in South Carolina, you’ll need to do a few things. These are the basic steps:
You’ll need a minimum of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university. You’ll also need a valid South Carolina professional teaching certificate.
In South Carolina, you must have three or more years of teaching experience.
There are plenty of leadership programs designed to prepare you for your role as a school principal. You’ll need to pass the principal exams before you get your certificate. The exam varies from state to state. In South Carolina, you’ll take the Praxis II Education Leadership: Administration and Supervision exam. The exams are designed to ensure you have the knowledge and skills to fulfill your duties as a principal.
You must pass a criminal history and background check before becoming a principal in South Carolina. You will also need to complete the fingerprinting process.
You will apply for your certificate through the South Carolina Department of Education.
